5. ASSESSMENT

• Evaluation of students shall normally be based on continuous assessment as well as formal university examinations that are held at the end of each semester.
• Continuous Assessment will account for 40% of the overall assessment. No continuous assessment shall be carried over to the next semester.
• The final examination accounts for 60% of the overall assessment.
• The department shall determine which items will be included in the continuous assessment and shall define the relevant weighting to each item.
• To be admitted to the examinations, a candidate must;
  • be a registered student of the University in accordance with the General Regulations
  • have satisfactorily attended and completed the approved modules of study. Completion of modules shall require submission of all written assignments and tests that constitute the continuous assessment
  • have attended and participated in seminars, tutorials practical classes, presentations and other activities as required by the Department.
  • Candidates shall be informed in advance of the deadline for submission of the dissertation or project. Unless the Academic Board has granted prior permission for an extension of this deadline any candidate who fails to meet this submission deadline shall normally fail the dissertation or project. In such cases, on the recommendation of the Examiners, candidates may be permitted to resubmit the dissertation or project at a later date, normally within three months of the original submission deadline. Unless otherwise determined by the Senate, the maximum mark allowed for such work should be 50%.

MTHE709 Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises Management

This module creates a comprehensive understanding of the nature and historical development of Tourism and Hospitality enterprises. The module raises students’ awareness of the global importance of Tourism and Hospitality enterprises and their unique structural and behavioural characteristics. The module therefore lays the foundation of this postgraduate degree programme.

MTHE 710 Financial Management for Tourism Enterprises

The aim of this module is to provide students with the requisite financial skills and knowledge needed to manage Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises. The students will be required to apply financial management skills to both live and theoretical Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises.

MTHE 711 Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises Innovations

Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises are renowned for their innovations. Therefore, students are expected to demonstrate how innovation has created sustainable competitive advantage for some Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises. MTHE 716 Corporate Governance for Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises

The modules will cover issues of corporate governance in Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises. The module covers such topics as the applicability of the King Code III, stakeholders in the governance structures, board composition, performance and remuneration management, risk governance, succession planning and ethics.

This module is designed to give students advanced skills in handling tourism crises. The tourism industry is today affected by a range of natural and man-made crises. To this end, the module examines how Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises are responding to these crises and explores contemporary disaster management strategies and models.

Investment in tourism accommodation is the major entry point for many entrepreneurs. It is with this background in mind that this module is designed to focus on the theory, principles and practices of managing tourism accommodation. The module considers key issues, current trends, and challenges among tourism accommodation providers.

MTHE 809 Strategic Human Resources Management for Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises

The module explores how Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises can be reconfigured in order to derive inimitable and sustainable competitive advantage from their human capital. The main themes explored in the module are employee recruitment, induction, training and development, retention and motivation. Students are expected to articulate leading and appropriate human resources strategies that can be utilized by Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises.

MTHE 810 Problem-solving live Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises Projects

This module brings to the fore, the learnt knowledge to the world of business in order to solve practical business problems. To this end, students will prescribe, recommend and implement feasible measures to address challenges faced by selected Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises.  Students will therefore be working closely with tourism entrepreneurs in this module.

MTHE 811 Business Research Project

In this module, students will initiate a Tourism and Hospitality Enterprise business plan in association with the university hub and the department. The Tourism and Hospitality Enterprises business plan should reflect innovative and enterprising ideas in its conception and possible operation.
