GWERU – The Faculty of Education at Midlands State University (MSU) celebrated a landmark achievement on Friday, 29 August, as it honoured the first graduates of its pioneering Micro:bit Teacher Training short course.

The programme is meticulously designed to arm local educators with the advanced digital skills essential for modern teaching.

Launched in direct response to the recent STEM Leadership and Strategy Symposium, this critical initiative addresses the divide between technology and pedagogy.

Its core mission is to transform conventional classrooms into vibrant, dynamic hubs of creativity and critical thinking.

Educators on the course gain hands-on, practical expertise to seamlessly integrate the versatile Micro:bit microcontroller into their curriculum, bringing lessons to life.

In a powerful keynote address, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Dr A. Moyo, laid out a visionary future for education—one that is technologically advanced yet deeply rooted in cultural identity.

“As you foster innovation, remember that the core of our curriculum must remain rooted in our culture, values and national identity,” Dr Moyo said. “Let technology be the tool we use to tell our own stories, address our unique challenges and build a future that is both digitally advanced and authentically ours.”

Dr Moyo stressed that the programme’s ambition extends far beyond mere technical instruction.

It is a transformative journey that reshapes pedagogical philosophy, empowering educators to prepare students to thrive as agile, innovative problem-solvers ready for a rapidly evolving world.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Dr Samuel Mashingaidze, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education’s Department of Educational Technology, who formally congratulated the cohort on their significant accomplishment.

The event was charged with a palpable sense of pride, a true testament to the educators’ unwavering dedication to their professional growth.

For the graduates, this ceremony ignites a new chapter.

They are now equipped to harness technology as a powerful instrument for crafting profoundly engaging, meaningful, and locally relevant learning experiences for every student.
