Gweru, Zimbabwe – 30 October 2025 — The future of Zimbabwean law burned brightly at Midlands State University as the nation’s premier legal body honoured a new generation of exceptional talent, affirming MSU’s place at the forefront of legal education.
In a prestigious ceremony held at the University’s Graduate School of Business Leadership, the Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) bestowed its annual awards upon MSU’s most outstanding law students, celebrating a standard of academic rigour and professional promise that sets a new benchmark for excellence.
The event shone a spotlight on scholars who have distinguished themselves through intellectual curiosity, unwavering dedication, and a profound commitment to their craft.
Setting the tone for the occasion, the Executive Dean – Faculty of Law, Dr. A. Mugadza, looked out at the honourees and set the tone with a powerful commendation.
“We are not just celebrating high marks today,” she stated, “but the emergence of future custodians of justice. These students have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and a passion for the law profession that is truly inspiring.”
Echoing this sentiment, the keynote address from LSZ Councillor, Mrs. N.N. Tshabalala, framed the awards within the Society’s broader mission.
With a clear-eyed vision for the profession’s future, she declared, “This initiative is designed to inspire future lawyers to raise their standards, thereby elevating the quality of lawyering across Zimbabwe. We are investing in the very bedrock of our legal system.”
The roll call of achievers featured both recent graduates and current students, whose names are now synonymous with excellence at the Faculty: Tashinga Nyahunzvi, acclaimed as the Best 2025 Female Graduate, Danai Chigowe, recognised as the Best 2025 Male Graduate.
The continuing cohort of high-flyers: Watson Tonderai Somerai, Settlement Chikwinya, Rosemary Jacob, and Bothwell Zikumva, also received accolades.
Faculty leaders like Mrs. L. Mapuva, Chairperson – the Procedural Law Department, applauded the LSZ partnership, noting that such recognition actively “fosters a culture of excellence, innovation, and healthy competition” within the university.
The voice of the recipients themselves was powerfully conveyed by W. T. Somerai, who expressed profound gratitude.
He emphasized that the LSZ’s endorsement serves as both a validation of their past efforts and a powerful catalyst for their future careers, driving them to “uphold the highest professional standards.”
Ultimately, these accolades are more than just individual triumphs; they are a resounding endorsement of the Midlands State University ethos.
The Law Society of Zimbabwe, as the guardian of the profession’s integrity and standards, does not confer its recognition lightly.
Its mandate is to ensure the legal field is populated by “fit and proper” persons—individuals of unimpeachable character, sharp intellect, and profound ethical grounding.
Honouring these students, the LSZ is sending an unambiguous message: the graduates nurtured at Midlands State University are not only academically superb but are also being shaped into the very archetype of the principled, proficient legal professional that Zimbabwe needs.
This is what MSU delivers: more than a degree, but a foundation for leadership and a legacy of excellence that will shape the courtrooms and boardrooms of tomorrow.
