Gweru, Zimbabwe – 11 March 2025 – In a landmark move to transform Work-Related Learning (WRL) assessments, Midlands State University (MSU) has launched an innovative WRL Database Management System.
Developed by the University’s Information Technology Services Department in collaboration with the WRL Department, this innovative digital platform is set to replace outdated manual processes, heralding a new era of efficiency and coordination in WRL programmes.
The unveiling event, held at the University, brought together key stakeholders, including chairpersons, lecturers, and WRL coordinators, to explore the system’s capabilities and provide critical feedback.
The initiative underscores MSU’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes and bridge the gap between academia and industry.
The new system is designed to streamline the entire WRL process, from student placements to industry partnerships, ensuring a seamless experience for all stakeholders.
Mr. Herbert Masukume, a lecturer in the Faculty of Business Sciences’ Management Sciences Department, emphasised the transformative potential of the innovation.
“This workshop is a critical step in empowering our lecturers with the latest technology to enhance the WRL coordination process.
“The system will not only simplify administrative tasks but also improve the quality of learning experiences for our students,” said Mr. Masukume.
The event featured a guided session led by Mr. Donald Mashiri, a software engineer at MSU, who provided attendees with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the new system.
The workshop also included a dynamic question-and-answer session, fostering robust discussions and yielding valuable recommendations for further refining the database’s functionality.
Mr. Tafadzwa Matsiya, MSU’s WRL Coordinator, highlighted the broader implications of the system.
“It’s not just about managing work-related placements; it’s about streamlining the entire process and ensuring that both students and industry partners benefit from a more efficient and effective system,” he stated.
The development of the WRL Database Management System is a testament to the power of collaboration between MSU’s Information Technology Services and WRL departments.
Mr. Masukume praised the joint effort, noting that it exemplifies the University’s dedication to innovation and excellence.
“This system is a product of teamwork and shared vision,” he said.
With the recommendations gathered during the workshop, MSU is poised to implement a highly efficient WRL process that aligns with global best practices.
The new system is expected to significantly reduce administrative burdens, improve data accuracy, and foster stronger partnerships between the University and industry stakeholders.
As Midlands State University continues to lead the way in educational innovation, the WRL Database Management System stands as a shining example of how technology can be harnessed to drive meaningful change.
